Yesterday I spent the entire day at the ARC/Loudermilk Center at a collegiate PRSA session. I got real sick of people asking me “what school are you from” and my canned reply “up the street, but I finished two years ago… I’m here for the business cards.”
See, I’m looking for a new job. I think everyone should realize when it’s time to move on in their career. And the key to finding job in Atlanta is knowing a bunch of people who actually have the ability to get you an interview. (Actually, I would love to go back to work for ignition. I’m handling that next week.)
Almost everyone at the session was either a junior or senior, looking for a summer internship. I wouldn’t turn-down an internship offer, but at 26 I need more responsibility.
In the lobby of the Center were several tables with representatives from various agencies and organizations, pretty much just tossing out business cards and collecting resumes in exchange for branded pens and coffee mugs. Typical career fair. I already had a connection at Golin Harris via their Chicago home office, but wanted to meet the reps from Atlanta. I couldn’t even navigate the room… the place was packed like a nightclub.
Let me break-down the demographics of this session. More than 300 people, aged 19-23, women outnumber men 25-1, white, blonde, heels, sense of importance. I said to another guy, “these girls are super competitive with each other, swarming to meet these professionals like a flock of…” pausing to search for the correct noun. “Seagulls?,” said the girl standing next to us. Yes. I don’t think she got the humor due to her age.
